Welcome!

We are a community of people growing together as disciples of Christ.

Our mission is to extend opportunities to everyone to know God, grow in faith, and serve others.

We would love to have you join us in worship at either of our services as we journey together in faith!

About Our Church

Downers Grove First United Methodist Church is a community growing together as disciples of Christ. Our mission is to help people know God, grow in faith, and serve others.

Worship is at the heart of our life together. Each week we bring our everyday lives, gifts, and hopes as we encounter the transforming love and grace of God in Christ.

Founded in 1836, our church has long been a place of faith, hope, and service in the Downers Grove community. Located on Maple Avenue near Main Street, we are committed to worship, faith formation, care, mission, and community outreach.

All are welcome here. We follow Jesus’ example of loving God and serving others, and we affirm the sacred worth and dignity of every person. As part of the Reconciling Ministries Network, we strive to be a fully inclusive church that reflects God’s image in everyone.

First Time?

Here are some answers to common questions and what to expect

We worship on Sundays at 8:30 AM in the Chapel and 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary. Our services follow the United Methodist tradition while welcoming fresh expressions of worship. You are welcome to dress casually or more formally. There is no dress code.

Children are always welcome in worship. Nursery care and Sunday School during the 10:00 AM service are also available.

The 8:30 AM service is a warm, 45-minute gathering with piano or organ music. During the summer, it may be held outdoors, weather permitting.

The 10:00 AM service takes place in the sanctuary with a choir, scripture readings, and responsive prayers. This service is also livestreamed on YouTube.

We invite you to join us and experience our community.

Parking is available in the front lot off Maple Avenue, where you’ll also find the main entrance and an automated handicap-accessible door.

Additional parking is available in the north (rear) lot off Grove Street. If our lots are full, overflow parking is available in the bank lot on Maple Avenue just past the church or along Grove Street behind the church.

Enter through the main doors from the Maple Avenue parking lot. From there, you can take a short flight of stairs or the elevator to the Sanctuary, where greeters will welcome you and provide a worship bulletin. Large-print bulletins, hymnals, and hearing assistance are available.

The Chapel, where the 8:30 AM service is held, is located on the first floor and clearly marked with directional signs.

After worship, feel free to stop by the parlor or welcome table to meet others and learn more about the church. The church office is on the second floor, directly off the elevator.

Children are always welcome in worship. We also offer nursery care and Sunday School during the 10:00 AM service.

Nursery Care (Birth–Age 3)
Our nursery is located on the first floor in Room 112. Follow the signs when you arrive.

Children’s Moment
During the 10:00 AM service, children are invited to come forward for a brief Children’s Moment. Afterward, our children’s pastor and teachers guide them to Sunday School.

Sunday School (Preschool–6th Grade)
Sunday School takes place during the 10:00 AM service and includes Bible stories, activities, crafts, and games that help children grow in faith. Children are also welcome to remain in worship with their families if they prefer.

Yes. We practice open communion, which means everyone is welcome at the table. You do not need to be a member of our church to participate.

Holy Communion is typically celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. Individually packaged wafers and communion cups are available for each person.

Our building is fully accessible. An automated door at the main entrance off Maple Avenue leads directly to the elevator, which provides access to every floor.

The sanctuary entrance is close to the main entrance and elevator, making worship easy to access. Wheelchair seating is available, and our ushers are happy to assist as needed.

We also offer large-print bulletins and hymnals, hearing assistance devices, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and a wheelchair lift to youth activity areas.

Finding a church home is a journey, and everyone is welcome to participate in the life of our church whether you are a member or not. We invite you and your family to join us in worship, events, and classes as you explore our community.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a member, please contact our church office at dgfumc@dgfumc.org or call 630-968-7120. We would be glad to help you take the next step.
