Favorite Moments from the Delegation to Guatemala, July 13-21, 2015

This July we sent our fifth delegation to visit the women of UPAVIM, a women’s cooperative in La Esperanza, our hermanamiento in Guatemala City, with whom we have a nine-year relationship. UPAVIM is an organization that provides employment to over 80 women in one of the poorest communities in Guatemala City, making the beautiful crafts that you have seen on sale in the parlor. This work has allowed them to fund and build a community center that includes a school, bakery, soy milk production and a medical clinic, pharmacy and laboratory.

During the trip, our representatives spent a few days living in the homes of some of the women of UPAVIM, sharing meals with their families and learning about the community of La Esperanza and the work of UPAVIM.

Below Michelle Loconte, Sam Snyder and Claire Pitstick, three of our delegation members, share their favorite moments from their experience.

Rally Day! Sunday, September 13

Please join us on Rally Day! as we kick-off our new year of educational ministries and prepare to learn to walk with Christ daily in the coming season. At this time, we will return to our three worship service and Sunday school format.

Every person that attends church on Rally Day will receive a cool drawstring backpack with a special message printed on it!

Following worship, Sunday school and Messy Church, everyone is invited to attend a Rally Day lunch, which will include a viewing of the Green Bay Packers verses the Chicago Bears game at noon on a large screen in the church gym.  The menu for the lunch will be Chicago style hot dogs and Wisconsin Brats (along with some other goodies).  Please sign up for the lunch by calling the church office. Please sign-up by Tuesday, September 8.

The Children & Family Work Area has reserved the Tivoli Movie Theater for our Rally Day celebration.  Everyone is invited to attend the movie The Game Plan that will be shown at 4:30 p.m. Each child (12 and under) who attends church that morning will receive a coupon for a free Kiddie Combo (box with popcorn, snack and drink). The doors open at the Tivoli at 4:00 p.m.

The movie is free for ALL so please invite your friends and neighbors to come to church in the morning and to the movie in the afternoon!

Support Hope's Front Door

Over the past 15 years, Hope’s Front Door (HFD) has provided emergency assistance to those in desperate need who include the unemployed, underemployed, homeless, seniors and disabled…more than 17,000 individuals and their families in Downers Grove and five neighboring villages. After determining their immediate needs through compassionate conversation, clients are helped with food, medical, dental and/or transportation vouchers, plus a clear pathway into the network of social agencies that can assist them with long-lasting changes to end the cycle of living crisis to crisis.

The Missions, Justice & Community work area recently made a donation to HFD. There are a number of ways you can personally support the organization:

Using Local Produce - Recipes

Summertime! How fortunate we are to enjoy the blessings from our Creator during the days of blue skies, rainbow-colored flowers and garden=fresh vegetables. Whether from our own back yards or from a local farmer’s market, the bounty of organic produce available gives us grateful hearts. When that zucchini comes in, though, Yikes! If you aren’t one to leave it on your neighbor’s doorstep, here’s a healthy cool soup to try yourself.

Chilled Zucchini and Avocado Soup Serves 2-4

4 small or 2 medium zucchini, coarsely chopped 2 avocados, peeled, coarsely chopped

3 green onions or scallions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, peeled and halved

½ tsp. Chili powder

½ tsp. coriander seeds, crushed

1 cup plain yogurt Salt and pepper to taste

¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro

Put first six ingredients in to a food processor and processor until smoothly combined.   Transfer the mixture to a medium bowl, then stir in the yogurt. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with chopped cilantro.

Roasted Tomato Basil Pesto

2 pre-roasted tomatoes or 1 large fresh tomato

2 cloves garlic, peeled and halved

3 Tbls. Pine nuts

2 Tbls. Extra virgin olive oil

1 cup whole basil leaves

½ cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese

2 Tbls. Soft butter Salt and Pepper

Combine first 6 ingredients in blender and process until just combined.  Add basil to small amounts until all is combined. Stir in Parmesan cheese and butter and season with salt and pepper to taste. Good on pizza, roasted vegetables, or an omelet. Variation: use cilantro instead of basil.

Letter/Prayer Mission Delegate to Guatemala Opportunity

Be a Letter or Prayer Mission Delegate to Guatemala.

We are sending seven delegates to Guatemala City from July 13-21 to continue to deepen our relationship with the families of UPAVIM, our hermanamiento facilitated through Sister Parish, an organization that pairs communities of faith in Central America with churches in North America. As we work together to build the Kingdom of God on earth, we share each other’s experiences so that we can better understand and overcome the sources of injustice and oppression, promoting mutual respect and dignity for all people, advocating for human rights and working for social and economic justice for all.

You can participate in this delegation by being a letter or prayer sponsor. It is important for the delegates to know that they represent our church community and that they carry with them your thoughts, blessings, and hopes for a safe and meaningful experience.

To be a letter sponsor, simply write a note of encouragement that the delegates can open and read each day they are there. Notes need to be turned into the church office by July 9. You may also email your letters to Sheila at sheila@dgfumc.org to have her print your note for the delegates. To be a prayer sponsor, commit to pray for our delegates on any of their mission days. This year’s delegates are Dale and Jessie Faber, Penny Fox, Michelle Loconte, Ray Osborn, Claire Pitstick and Samantha Snyder.

They will be commissioned during the 10:00 a.m. worship on Sunday, July 12.
