September is Hunger Action Month

Food insecurity exists in our Northern Illinois neighborhood. A 2014 study shows the following for the 13 counties (Boone, DuPage, DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Will & Winnebago) served by the Northern Illinois Food Bank:

  • Children under age 18 make up 36% of our hungry neighbors, while seniors age 60 and older make up 9%.
  • Among all hungry neighbors, 40% identify as white, 33% identify as Hispanic or Latino and 17% identify as black or African American.
  • 66% of households that use the Food Bank’s services have incomes that fall at or below the federal poverty level.
  • Clients are making tough choices:  77% of households the Food Bank serves had to choose between paying for food and utilities in the past 12 months, and 62% had to choose between food and paying for medicine/medical care in the past 12 months.

Favorite Moments from the Delegation to Guatemala, July 13-21, 2015

This July we sent our fifth delegation to visit the women of UPAVIM, a women’s cooperative in La Esperanza, our hermanamiento in Guatemala City, with whom we have a nine-year relationship. UPAVIM is an organization that provides employment to over 80 women in one of the poorest communities in Guatemala City, making the beautiful crafts that you have seen on sale in the parlor. This work has allowed them to fund and build a community center that includes a school, bakery, soy milk production and a medical clinic, pharmacy and laboratory.

During the trip, our representatives spent a few days living in the homes of some of the women of UPAVIM, sharing meals with their families and learning about the community of La Esperanza and the work of UPAVIM.

Below Michelle Loconte, Sam Snyder and Claire Pitstick, three of our delegation members, share their favorite moments from their experience.

Rally Day! Sunday, September 13

Please join us on Rally Day! as we kick-off our new year of educational ministries and prepare to learn to walk with Christ daily in the coming season. At this time, we will return to our three worship service and Sunday school format.

Every person that attends church on Rally Day will receive a cool drawstring backpack with a special message printed on it!

Following worship, Sunday school and Messy Church, everyone is invited to attend a Rally Day lunch, which will include a viewing of the Green Bay Packers verses the Chicago Bears game at noon on a large screen in the church gym.  The menu for the lunch will be Chicago style hot dogs and Wisconsin Brats (along with some other goodies).  Please sign up for the lunch by calling the church office. Please sign-up by Tuesday, September 8.

The Children & Family Work Area has reserved the Tivoli Movie Theater for our Rally Day celebration.  Everyone is invited to attend the movie The Game Plan that will be shown at 4:30 p.m. Each child (12 and under) who attends church that morning will receive a coupon for a free Kiddie Combo (box with popcorn, snack and drink). The doors open at the Tivoli at 4:00 p.m.

The movie is free for ALL so please invite your friends and neighbors to come to church in the morning and to the movie in the afternoon!
