Sonshine Youth Choir Summer Tour 2016

Join us Sunday, July 17 as we welcome the Sonshine Choir from Brentwood United Methodist Church in Tennessee as they lead us in worship with their 2016 Summer Tour program Nothing in All Creation Can Separate Us from God’s Love. The 80 voice choir, made up of youth from 10th - 12th grade, is making stops this summer in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Tennessee. We hope to see you there!

A Word from Our Denomination

As United Methodist Christians, we mourn with the victims and families of those wounded and killed in the shootings on June 12, 2016 in Orlando, Florida. We may even pray and wonder if anything could have been done to avert this heinous act.

But should we do more? Is there anything that can be done to keep something similar from happening in the future?

While we may not agree on a solution, many of us agree there is a problem. What can we do?

In the aftermath of the worst mass shooting incident in U.S. history, church leaders say United Methodists must speak up about the contributing factors — bigotry, hatred and the availability of military-style guns.

“I hope United Methodists will see this as an opportunity to speak up and speak on behalf of what is at the core of our DNA — love God and love neighbor,” Bishop Bruce Ough, president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops, told United Methodist News Service. “Wesley was pretty clear that that’s the mark of who we are.”

In May, the United Methodist General Conference, the denomination’s top legislative body, approved “Our Call to End Gun Violence” legislation, which includes eight ways United Methodists may prayerfully address gun violence including advocating for universal background checks on all gun purchases and a ban on large-capacity ammunition magazines and weapons designed to fire multiple rounds.

You may read the legislation in its entirety below.

It's Time

One of the other major legislative issues at General Conference in May will be the denomination’s stance and statements on homosexuality. Reconciling Ministries Network invites all Reconciling Communities to join together in worship on Sunday, May 1st to declare that “It’s Time” for The United Methodist Church to end its discrimination against LGBTQ persons. Join us in the Parlor on Sunday to sign a poster or have your picture taken with a sign saying “It’s Time” which will be posted to social media. RMN supports The Simple Plan as a proposal coming before the 2016 General Conference to be held in Portland, Oregon. Details may be found here on the RMN website.

A number of congregations in Northern Illinois Conference are hosting the film An Act of Love, a documentary about Rev. Frank Schaefer, who had his ministerial credentials revoked in December, 2013 after officiating his son’s same-sex wedding. On Sunday, May 1st, Community UMC, 20 N. Center St., Naperville, will host a screening from 3:00-5:30pm. Following the screening, there will be talkback led by Love Your Neighbor Coalition members Matt Berryman, RMN Executive Director, and Sue Laurie of Love Prevails.
