Sunday Morning Bible Study

This fall we are pleased to welcome back Osvaldo Vena as the leader of our Sunday morning bible study class. Rev. Vena, a member of our church, is a professor of New Testament Interpretation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston.

To start we will finish studying the book of Revelation. Don’t worry if you did not attend the spring class as our first few sessions this fall will include a catch up on the previous material. After completing our study of Revelation, we will move to the book of Mark and a brief account of Daniel.

CROP Hunger Walk

DGFUMC Team 2016

Sunday, October 15

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4501 Main Street, Downers Grove (map)
1:30 - Registration
2:00 - Walk begins

Please join us on this year's South DuPage CROP Hunger Walk! (map)

  • If we get over 75 walkers, Pastor John Smoke will wear his prized John Wesley bobblehead.
  • If we get over 100 walkers, our Youth Pastor, Howie Snyder will wear his own Wesley mask.

Turn this into a Wesley celebration by registering for the walk online. You can also register in the Parlor on Sundays. The Missions, Justice and Community Work Area will donate $10 for everyone who walks.

Another incentive for registering online:

  • Raise over $150 by the walk, and record all of them (online and offline donations) on your CROP Hunger Walk donation page, and you will receive a tee shirt from CWS.

If you can't walk, please donate to someone on the DGFUMC teame.g.

The South DuPage community have raised over $700,000 over the past 30 years through holding this annual CROP Hunger Walk, which helps to support the grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts of Church World Service (CWS) partner agencies in more than 80 countries.

To register or donate online, visit the South DuPage CROP Hunger Walk home page.

Taking Care of Your Loved Ones - Part II

Taking Care of Your Loved Ones - Part II

Taking Care of Your Loved Ones - What You Need To Know Before Making a Decision

Four members of our church share their experiences with the aging facilities their loved ones entered. They will help you know what questions to ask about care and the hidden clauses and costs that are found only in the small print of a contract.

  • Sarah DeMink recently explored options for the care of a cousin.
  • Kathleen Schultz’s parents were both in assisted living facilities.
  • Rosie Roose had power of attorney for her friend at Oak Trace who recently died.
  • Kerri Crandell’s father was in memory care for several years before he died.

It is not what we know, but what we don’t know that we need help with in making decisions about our lives and our loved ones' care.
Come and learn from the experts; the people with experience.

Fit & Feast

Fit & Feast

Begins Wednesday, September 27
6:15 p.m.

Start your New Year’s Resolution early. Give yourself the gift of a better life!

Fit and Feast will meet once a month from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. during the Family Fellowship dinner, childcare provided upon request. During that time you will meet with a group leader to choose a goal to commit to for a month in each of four areas; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

For example, you may choose from a list to commit to - exercise 15 minutes a day, look for a silver lining in stressful events, have a weekly chat with a friend, apologize when you wrong someone - simple things that can make a difference over time.

Each month we will discuss how your commitments went and you can choose to renew or change your goals for the next month. Sign-up in the church office and/or look for more information in the parlor and in the bulletin soon.

Friday Night at the Movies

Friday Night at the Movies

Do you remember what life was like before Facebook and other social media sites changed communication as we knew it? Kay Mundy and Owen Bates will present our October film, The Social Network, a highly acclaimed 2010 biographical drama that tells the story of the founding of Facebook by Harvard undergrad Mark Zuckerberg. It is a complex story involving competing ideas and rivals, lawsuits and eventual settlements that nevertheless result in Zuckerberg becoming the youngest billionaire ever. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Zuckerberg, the film won three Oscars as well as several Golden Globe awards, including Best Picture Drama. Critics loved this film; Roger Ebert called The Social Network the best film of the year.

Please sign-up now by calling or stopping by the church office. We had a waiting list in September, so don’t wait! We will enjoy snacks and beverages throughout the evening.
